Brief History of Project
- This project was the fourth symposium in a series of annual ASEAN-UNDP-China Symposium on SDGs. The previous three iterations of the symposium were titled: (i) Leave No One Behind in 2016; (ii) Financing Implementation of SDGs in ASEAN in 2017; and (iii) Localization of SDGs in ASEAN in 2018.
- The 2019 Symposium focused on inclusive innovations that can be utilised and strengthened to accelerate the attainment of the SDGs and eradicating poverty in the respective contexts of ASEAN and China.
- The symposium provided a learning platform for dynamic exchanges on pro-poor innovations, social innovations, partnership innovation as well as innovations in science and technology.
- The symposium was attended by representatives from (i) SOMRDPE, (ii) SOMSWD, (iii) ACWC, (iv) national planning agencies from Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Viet Nam, (v) People’s Republic of China, and (vi) the ASEAN Secretariat. In addition, development practitioners and experts, and representatives from international organizations, private sectors, and innovation communities, academic institutions, among others, were also present.
The Symposium consisted of three (3) panel discussions namely: (i) ASEAN Way of Promoting Inclusive Innovation for the SDGs: Exploring New Models of Inclusive Innovation; (ii) Exploring the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation for Poverty Eradication; and (iii) Building Meaningful and Impactful Innovation Ecosystems and Parallel Roundtable Discussion.
Key learnings and ways forward derived from the symposium include:
a. Direct innovation efforts towards inclusivity and the achievement of the SDGs;
b. Design innovation policy for and by the local context while acknowledging and boosting the existing and distinctive solutions emerging from and within the region;
c. Include different components/stakeholders of the society in innovation policy; and
d. Promote more robust analysis and sharing of impactful initiatives on inclusive innovation from diverse fields of sustainable development.
